about

Jupi/ter returns for the second chapter of Islands, building upon the tale of interconnectedness set up by the first. From Part 1’s more expansive beginnings, Part 2 finds grounding in more specific themes - growth, decay and our immediate existence - though ever from the perspective of necessity.

Where Part 1 started with the space, the distance, and the whole, Part 2 hones in closer, as if magnifying from a position of wider space to one more tangible and intimate. Where Part 1 exposed ideas of interconnectedness, Part 2 explores just what it is that both separates and connects us - the trees, oceans and animals, and the ways they perform their roles, seemingly individual, but ultimately related.

Islands, Pt. 2 is noticeably more melodic, evoking vivid shapes and colours with more familiarity than its preceding chapter: nature’s growth and nurturing, its disease and decay, the revolution of day and night, expanses of open water, life’s countless creatures, and us, part of the ever-fluid whole.

And yet, with this closer proximity comes greater chances for discomfort, resistance and tension. The simplicity owed by Part 1’s removed position is replaced by an altogether more consuming, vibrant, ever-changing and unstable encounter. The world around us is not separate from us as humans - as observers and, crucially, actors on our environment. In this way, Islands, Pt. 2 is a taste of what this interconnectedness means within our everyday experience.
